I am excited to announce that a project I have been working on the past two years has finally come to fruition. I have completed a new book called Voices of The Colorado Trail. It will be back from the printer and available for sale by March 7th, 2017. The book contains nearly 200 images from the trail, over 60 hiker and mountain biker interviews from the past two years, my own unusual take on each trail segment drawn from my experience of hiking the trail three times, and a few trail poems. It is not so much a Guide Book as it is a celebration of what it is like to be on the trail itself. It is a book about the experience of the trail, rather than its day-to-day reality. It appeals to the heart, which I think really makes the decision to hike or bike a long trail.
Here are a few of my favorite comments from reviewers.
Anyone who is thinking about hiking a major trail should read this book with caution because by the time they are done, they won’t just be thinking about it anymore.
Fanning’s cynicism, which is at heart pure optimism with a flak jacket, is really funny.
This book grabbed my heart right from the start. I’m sure anyone who buys this book will treasure it.
What an uplifting book! It made me want to go on the trail and experience it all myself. The photos are gorgeous.
I laughed, I cried, I packed my bags. This is a great story!
The travelers in the book have shared their dreams, their hopes, and their experience of the trail with me. Unlike most guidebooks, which address the how and what of a trail, this book addresses the question of why you might want to hike or ride the trail. Each voice in the book whispers of adventure, challenge, and personal transformation.
