Every person who undertakes a journey on The Colorado Trail has a different experience of the trail. The trail is inevitably filled with profound beauty, challenges to be overcome, surprising friendships, unexpected kindness, and sometimes pain and injury. I was interested in learning the story behind the experience, so I decided to interview as many of my fellow travelers as possible as I traversed the trail northbound. The following short video will show you pictures of the people I interviewed, and will give you a few samples from the interviews to see the kinds of stories hikers, mountain bikers, and horse packers tell when they are on the trail. I found the stories to be occasionally poignant, often funny, and always entertaining.
Each interview I conducted was from 5 to 30 minutes in length and was taped on a Sony ICD-PX333 digital voice recorder. Pictures of each interview subject were taken with an iPhone 6 camera and later processed in Adobe Lightroom software. Interview subjects were incredibly gracious with their time and willingness to talk to me about their trail experience. I thank them all.
Edited transcripts of approximately 100 interviews, along with a picture, are available on this website.
