“I started as a solo hiker and I’ve met up with several people to hike with them for a few days at a time. Pop-Tart and I met in the hiker hostel in Salida, and our pace is similar, so we have been leapfrogging each other and camping a bit together. I’ve enjoyed the experience of both being by myself and of being with people. We build more campfires when I’m camping with someone else. I wouldn’t usually build a campfire if I was camping by myself.
The first half of the trail, my food was perfect. I had enough to eat, and I wasn’t particularly hungry. But since I left Salida, I am hungry all the time! I really hadn’t thought much about food, or eating a candy bar for a snack. But since Salida, I am really looking forward to my snacks. I mean, really looking forward to it! When I get to town, I’m a complete glutton. I really am looking forward to a Cliff Bar right now. It’s kind of sad.
My worst moment on the trail was when I was camping by myself at Razor Creek. I freaked myself out. I was camped in some trees and I had gone to bed early, because I was really tired. About 10 pm I heard all this crunching and branches breaking outside my tent. I had no idea what it was, so I grabbed my little knife and I put on my glasses. When I opened my tent, there was a whole herd of pure black cows just staring at me from about four feet away. It took me a few seconds to realize they were just cows.”
